Why So Much Profanity In Our Music?

Obrafour
It appears that many up-and-coming musicians in the country have resorted to the use of rhyming profane words as their claim to stardom.

Little do they know that profanity will ultimately make their dreams of becoming stars remain an illusion. Obscene songs may only make a musician popular in the eyes of members of the public who indulge in profanity, but when it comes to the search for top artistes for honour the searchlight will certainly not fall on them.

Indeed my investigations have revealed that though some members of the public seem to listen and even dance to profane songs, they do not purchase such works.

There are many others who churn out edifying lyrics that portray the realities of life and success stories of some artistes behind such lyrics are always in the headlines for all to see.

Kwabena Okyere Darko, a.k.a. Obrafour for instance is one artiste whose good lyrics have sent him up above the skies, Obrafour does only portray the culture of our communities, but also puts across pieces of advice to his fans and the nation as a whole.

Most people think gospel music is the only source from which one can find clean, encouraging words, but it is a fact that many highlife songs also have some good words for the people, though some smack of profanity.

What is important is for executive producers and other persons who handle the artistes to advise them to refrain from indecent lyrics and use the opportunity to help move the country forward.

We cannot blindly imitate foreign cultures that accept filthy words as harmless. The originator of hiplife, Reggie Rockstone, should use his position as the ?Grand Papa? of hiplife and advise his followers against indecency.

He could organise seminars or workshops to educate his followers on how to produce fine saleable lyrics. Sad to say that some elderly people in music also perpetrate obscenity and it is time stakeholders in music sustained their fight against profanity to save future musicians from the ?dirt? that will not help them to realize their dreams.
