Basare paramount chief dies at 100

Tatale, (Northern Region), 20 Nov, 1998 The death is reported of the paramount chief of the Basare traditional area, Nakpali Bore Mpong Gnaagma the twelfth, at his palace at Tatale last Sunday, November 15, 1998 after a short illness. He was believed to be more than 100 years old. A 10-member delegation of elders of the traditional area, announced the death to the Ya-Na Andani, overlord of Dagbon, at Yendi today. The late chief was enskinned as chief of Tatale in 1967 and was elavated to paramount status in 1995. Ya-Na expressed regrets at the death of Bore Mpong whom he described as a man of peace. He extended the condolences of the chiefs and people of Dagbon to the people of Basare and the bereaved family and hoped that despite his passing away, the people of Basare will continue to pursue peace which was the late chief's pre- occupation. Ya-Na advised against an extravagant funeral saying such funds should be saved for the upkeep of the chief's widows and children. The leader of the delegation, Sheini Bore Chammanya Poadi, thanked Ya-Na for his fatherly advice and assured him that the people in the area will continue to live in peace. He said the late Nakpali Bore Mpong will be buried on Tuesday, December 15, 1998.
