Spacefon Honours Legends

Abrantie Amakye Dede with Azumah Nelson
Two distinguished gentlemen, renowned highlife musician Amakye Dede and Ghanaian boxing legend, Azumah Nelson, were honoured at the second Spacefon Legends Nite at the National Theatre in Accra.

Though the Boxing Professor was not there personally to pick up his award, his loving wife Peggy was there to represent him.

Abrantie was however at the show to receive his award and took patrons down memory lane with some brilliant performances.

The show began with Kumasi based gospel artiste Kwaku Gyasi after which the ?ex-spacefon? legend Reggie Rockstone gave a little of his stuff with young artiste K.K. Fosu. The evening saw some wonderful performances from Obour, VIP, Ghana?s representatives at this year?s KORA Music Awards in South Africa and Nigerian Superstar Orlando Julius.

The proverbial Ghanaian saying that the ?Crab does not give birth to the Bird? was widely evident when Femi Kuti, son of the late Fela Kuti from Nigeria came up on stage. Together with his Positive Force, Femi gave such a powerful performance that he left no doubt on the minds of patrons that ?the blood of his late father still runs in him?.

After the long performance from Femi, patrons could no longer wait for their local legend to give them something in a home grown style. Dressed in a warrior?s outfit, Amakye came up stage from the crowd amidst loud cheers from the crowd.

He dedicated his first song to his mentor, the late Akwasi Ampofo Agyei, whom he described as, the one who taught me how to hold the microphone. Thereafter, Amakye was unstoppable, dishing out some of his hit songs.

The 2004 Spacefon Music legend took a short break during which Burger Highlife George Darko did a few of his favourite songs. Amakye later came back to receive his award and continued with his performances.

The event which is a Charterhouse Production instituted last year, celebrates the life and times of accomplished Ghanaian personalities in all fields of endeavours. Amakye Dede and Azumah Nelson were chosen for this year?s awards based on their commitment to their respective fields.
