Mzbel reveals the hidden truth

Anyone who has heard the song and term “E Dey Be” will know it is the first time fans have heard a new material from Mzbel since her silence from the game after her horrific attack.

Mzbel received her big break in the Ghanaian music industry through Uncle Danny, owner of Hush Hush Studios. Impressed by her music, Uncle Danny decided to send her to the recording booth. And out came the hit song, “Awoso Me”, later following it up with “16 years”.

With an aggressive and seductive style honed in the Ghanaian music industry, I caught Mzbel on TV, when she performed at a sports award ceremony recently.

In 2006, she appeared again on the music industry with the hit album, “16 Years” and now she says “E Dey Be”. So far she has starred in some Ghanaian movies. While Jay Q produced more songs, Appietus could also be found on the album with voices of Castro, Shilo, Kwabena Kwabena, Kofi B and Screwface on some of the songs.

Mzbel has been on a low-key, working on new songs and prepping the release of the third album. Ghana Music.com tracked down Mzbel to talk about her disappearance, upcoming album, future plans and guess what; she opened up willingly to the no. 1 website when it comes to information about Ghana music. Ghana Music.com: What dey be?

Mzbel: It’s a term meaning everything ‘dey be’.

Ghana Music.com: Your second album, 16 Years, had most songs produced by Jay Q and guest appearances from Castro? Will you follow the same trend?

Mzbel: Yeah but a few differences. I included Screwface, Shilo, Kofi B, Kwabena Kwabena and Castro. Appietus too played some beats.



Ghana Music.com: Is there still any bad blood between you and Goodies?

Mzbel: Hmmm. I thought Goodies was cool with me. I used to work at TV3 and quit for a job at Metro TV. I can still go to TV3 and work there. Goodies still has problems with me. I recently went to the wife’s salon to do my hair, fix my nails and even ate there. This should tell you I have no problems with Goodies but I even heard he is telling people he hates me and that I shouldn’t come to his wife’s salon.

Ghana Music.com: You’re one of the few female hiplife artistes today. Do you think there’s a market for female rappers who rely on skills over sex appeal?

Mzbel: Lyrics don’t sell; it’s rather the rhythm of the song. With my song especially, people outside don’t understand it but like the rhythm.



Ghana Music.com: What have you been up to since the delay of your album?

Mzbel: I have been shooting some movies. I will also be travelling for some holidays but a show outside just coincided with it. Am also trying to finish editing the video of my new album.



Ghana Music.com: With the way you are talking, it seems production of the album is wholly done by you.

Mzbel: It will be under my new record label called Mzbelonline, a name which my boyfriend used in registering the company in UK.

Ghana Music.com: Have you ever felt like giving up since you have delayed?

Mzbel: Never.



Ghana Music.com: Ever thought of having a strong girl-group?

Mzbel: Yes. I have a group that I have groomed. Their style is different from mine. They would be doing rapping in Twi, English and maybe Ga. They are known as Bel Angels.



Ghana Music.com: What’s next for you?

Mzbel: Am a woman so after the release the album, I might marry.
