Hewale Sounds To Launch Album

Hewale Sounds, a traditional music ensemble based at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre in Accra will on Friday March 11 2005 launch its latest album at the Goethe-Institute in Accra.

Titled "Trema", the eleven-track CD comprises music that is inspired by traditional Ghanaian/African rhythms, beats and proverbs.

Employing the use of indigenous African instruments such as "Gonje", "Korogo", "Xylophones", "Atenteben" and an array of African drums, the group has managed to fuse traditional rhythms and their contemporary extensions.

Formed a couple of years ago, Hewale Sounds has enchanted audiences in Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Jordan, Norway, South Africa and the United States.

It has also held workshops for several students and lecturers from several parts of Europe and the United States.

In 2004, the group took part in a charity concert organised by the Busia Foundation alongside the American star Stevie Wonder and Afro Roots Reggae mogul Rocky Dawuni.

Dignitaries expected at the launch include Prof. John Collins, Head, Music Department, University of Ghana, Legon, Dr Willie Anku, Music Department, University of Ghana, Legon, Abdon Berthelot, Director, Alliance Française and Eleonore Sylla, Director, Goethe-Institute, Accra.

A special concert by the group will follow the launching, which will be performed by Dr Kodzo Gavua, Department of Archaeology, University of Ghana, Legon.
