Asekye-Krukese (Brong Ahafo), 9 Feb. '99 - More than 200 people were displaced at Asekye-Krukese, near Nkoranza, when bushfire swept through the Zongo area of the town on Friday, February five, destroying 14 thatched houses.

Personal effects and food items worth about 25 million cedis were completely destroyed. They include clothing, bicycles, 120 bags of maize, 3,000 tubers of yams, 10 bags of dried cassava chips and 10 bags of groundnuts. Cash totalling 1.5 million cedis belonging to a number of individual farmers were also burnt, Mr Alidu Fuseini, a member of the Zongo area unit committee, told this to newsmen after inspecting the damage.

According to Mr Fuseini, the inhabitants of the predominantly Muslim community, had left for Friday prayers at the nearby Pinihe central mosque when the incident occurred. He appealed to the Islamic Council, the Nkoranza District Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation for assistance.
