Entertainment - Review of Year 2007

Nana Quame

It is said that in life history will always repeat itself in whatever we do, that is why it has become expedient for your exciting Chronicle’s entertainment train driver to take you down the memory lane on some of the activities that occurred in the showbiz industry last 2007.

Though the entertainment industry seems pleasant in the early stages of the year, because the year 2007 marked the 50th anniversary celebrations of the nation, lots of activities were organized to that effect beginning with the Ghana music awards and then the crowning of the controversial Miss Ghana @ 50.

Talents hunts like the ‘Stars of the Future’ also captured the attention of music lovers as they waited eagerly for the winner to emerge, this time round the winner was male, Justice who drove away the KIA car in smiles leaving those in support of Frederica in tears.

Oohps! How can your train driver forget the return of the latest graduate in town, for he schooled in the United Kingdom for two years because of his encounter with cocaine, Daasebre returned home last year with not only a certificate in computer studies but some fine amount of pounds as compensation! How fortunate he was.

At a point the showbiz industry seemed very vibrant and promising till death pooped its head, the later part of the year saw the demise of some personalities in the industry, first was Philip Nyarko, a.k.a Brother Phillip, a gentleman who hit the gospel music scenes with a hit making song “Mo ma yen nko gya me’ just as he was making news with the song he departed suddenly.

As if that was not enough many had to follow, thus in the year 2007 the Ghanaian showbiz industry lost the likes of Mufti Dabre, Ola Williams, Bishop Michael Osei Bonsu, Kojo Aquai, Azuma Ayeezoya and David Laryea Afortey a.k.a. Apor just to mention a few, may their souls rest in perfect peace and whoever boards this train should please observe a minute silence for these loved ones.

“Ghana Rocks with Ofori Amponsah and Friends” this show followed up after the night of 1005 laughs and it also took place at the National Theatre.

After Nana Quame’s assertion that he was better a stage performer than Ofori Amponsah, the organized for Ofori and his friends by Charterhouse was the platform to prove to all that he too could rock and he did compared to last two year’s show.

Despite his effort, many are still of the view that he sucks on stage and his latest fault is his inability to dance, honestly your train driver is of the view that Ofori is doing his best to improve and his last show confirms his effort so let him be!”.

The Decemba2Rememba show also exploded with the appearance of several artistes that made audience stand on their feet non stop, dancing their hearts out amid shots of joy.

Slim Busterr and his dancer set the tone for a fine night with a well executed dance routine and mine! That guy is never short of new moves, also on the bill were Okyeame Quami and Bradez coming all the way from Kumasi. Tic Tac backed by an all male band struck the tune for the famous “Philomena”, and screams from the audience explained the excitement in the auditorium, Mzbell also contributed her quota to the show and so did the boys from the hood V.I.P.

When Kwaku Gyasi mounted the stage, he turned the place to church service with handkerchiefs here and there, he brought in some Holy Ghost filled fire onto the stage, and at this point the audience wanted for Samini to climax the whole event.

At last at 2:10am the Megastar Band struck the tune of “Odo” then “Linda” and “Samini” there came Samini running in spotting a white blazer and black pair of tight jeans, but his outfit did not compliment the appalling performance he put up on stage.

All Samini did on stage that night was contrary to what his fans were expecting from him and if he put up another performance like that again his fans will denounce him, but with a exception of Samini’s flaw the show was good and kudos to the organizers, the show was powered by Citi FM in collaboration with Agoo Magazine and sponsored by Coca Cola, MTN and Burn Energy Drink.

Before your train driver makes a stop, the final event for last year was the colorful carnival that took place at Osu OSU R.E., popularly known as ‘Oxford Street’ on New Year’s Eve.

It was one of the biggest outdoor entertainment events in Accra and good way to draw the curtain on the Golden Jubilee year and usher in 2008 in style. It was all music, fun and merry-making with hundreds of people dressed in fancy and colorful costumes pouring onto the streets of Ghana’s ’small London’ in celebration of peace and West African culture.

All said and done the year 2007 had its ups and downs and as we hope for the best in this year, your exciting train driver wishes all passengers that boarded the train last year to make it a point to keep on boarding in this year for the best in entertainment news and up close interviews as well as gossip here and the here.
