Barniekrom (Ashanti), 29 Jan. '99-
The Chief and people of Barniekrom in the Atwima District have called on the Police to take firm measures to enforce traffic discipline on the Kumasi - Bibiani road. They accused drivers using the road of showing total disregard for traffic regulations and unnecessary speeding that often result in fatal accidents. Mr Osei Tutu, the assembly member, said last year, four people were knocked down and killed in separate accidents that occurred in the town alone which is sited along the road. The assembly member, who was welcoming Mr Peter Yaw Mensah, the District Chief Executive for the area, during his five- days official working tour of some communities in the district to the town noted that but for excessive speeding on the part of the drivers those accidents could have been avoided. The tour was aimed at affording the District Chief Executive an opportunity to know at first hand the development problems and needs of the people and create a forum to explain to them government programmes and the assembly's efforts at helping to better their living conditions. Mr Osei Tutu also complained about the lack of good drinking water for the people in the community who are predominantly cocoa and food crop farmers. He said they are presently engaged in the construction of a Day Care Centre and appealed to the district assembly for support in the form of cement and roofing sheets. Mr Mensah assured them that he would personally take up the issue of indiscipline on the road with the Police authorities to help save lives of both passengers and pedestrians. He advised the people to live in peace and unity, adding that, they should avoid land litigation.
