Buk Bak Stands Out As Great Storytellers

Prince Bright and Ronnie Coches who joined forces in the late 90?s and came out with the group name Buk Bak have since been taking the Ghanaian music scene by storm with their splendid and remarkable blend of voices.

The hiplife duo, always make it big in the music industry anytime they come out with an album. They came out with their maiden album in 1998 entitled ?Komi Ke Kena? which they took one week in writing the lyrics and one week in recording. I guess you are surprised.

They then came out with an album titled ?Anwensem? in the year 2000 on which they had hit songs like ?Chingilingi?, ?Akwasi Broni? and the likes. They followed with another hit album which received massive airplay titled ?Nkomhye? (Prophecy) in 2001.

In their 2002 hit song ?Klu Blofo? on the ?Sika Kokoo? album, they skillfully told us a story of a young man who wanted to talk to a girl who was a university graduate. Unknown to him, the girl speaks better English than he does so he eventually gave an excuse as ?I am going to come?.

On their current album titled Gold Coast 1662, they continue the storytelling trend with songs like ?Gonja Barracks?, ?Mini?, ?Helepu? (Help), ?Tankase? (Town Council), ?Kakalika? (Cockroaches), ?Kululu? and ?Bibini Ba?.

?Gonja Barracks? which has this rag life feeling tells the story of a young man who is determined to fight through thick and thin with or without any intimidation or detention to take his lover who is being claimed by another man. The determined young man goes on to say that not even the frightening Gonja Barracks (housing for soldiers in Ghana) would deter him.

?Helepu? (Help) is similarly entertaining. It also tells a story of an unhappy young man who is hurt and cries for help since his lover is going out with a wealthy man. The unhappy young man has a feeling that things will work out or good things will happen in future. He has the dream of riding in a Grand Cherokee SUV some time to come.

Another hit song ?Mini? is likely to be one of the best songs ever in the hiplife industry. In this song, Bright (Buk Bak) makes a long deep sound expressing unhappiness over what he considers unfair hatred from friends. ?What at all have I done wrong?? is the question he asks.

?Tankase? (Town Council) featuring Castro also has this catchy rhythm which makes listeners dance to their feet. This song also highlights on the cleanliness of the environment. It lays emphasis on people being clean and neat.

Buk Bak due to their successful performances was the only group which was selected in Africa for the Clandestino Festival- Sweden. In the year 2003, they won 3 awards at the Ghana Music Awards UK- Song of the Year award, Artiste of the Year award and the Best achievement award. Actually, the Best achievement award was won by Reggie Rockstone but he (Reggie) presented it to Buk Bak for their great performances that year.

They also won the Hiplife artiste of the year 2003 and Hiplife song of the year 2003 at the Ghana Music Awards 2003. When the Our Music Awards 2003 was organised, they were again awarded with the Song of the Year award.
