Government urged to invest in athletics

Mr Albert Atutiga, Managing Director of Tamale Girls' International School on Wednesday appealed to government to pay serious attention to athletics in the country as a substitute to the sinking image of football.

He said the youth, particularly females, could excel in athletics to regain the country's dented image in sports as result of a drop in the standard of soccer if they are encouraged to do so.

Mr Atutiga who is the Deputy Sports Organiser in the Northern Region was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Tamale on Wednesday about the way forward in Ghana Sports after the just ended Inter-Schools and Colleges Sports Festival at Damongo in the West Gonja District.

He said the performance of girls at games at Damongo showed clearly that girls could do better in athletics.

Miss Inusa Anatu a sixteen year-old girl from the Tamale Girls' International School was adjudged the overall best female athlete, having won both the100 and 200 meters events.

Commenting on the performance of the Senior National Soccer Team, he called for its re-organization to make it much more winsome in assignments.

He said football in Ghana is now at the crossroads and the only way to revive it was to train local players and keep them together for long periods.
