AAG: Ghana beats Nigeria in 4x100 metres

From Richard Avornyotse, GNA, Algiers, Algeria

Algiers, July 19, GNA- Vida Anim produced a blistering finish to give Ghana a victory in the first heat of the 4x100 metres women's relay at the 9th All Africa Games in Algiers.

The victory, though only in the qualifies, was a soothing balm for Vida who lost the flat race to Nigerian, Damola Osayemi.

Receiving the baton for the anchor leg from Gifty Addy, who was trailing her Nigerian far by about eight metres, Anim produced a spectacular finish to go past the Nigerian anchor and win in a close finish at the tape.

It was a race won through sheer determination and bravado and indeed soothed the sinews of the Ghanaian athletes and other delegation members and journalists present at the stadium. The Ghanaian team, which paraded Marian Salifu and Esther Danquah returned a time of 44.31 as against 44.33 by Nigeria in second position and 45.02 by Cameroon in third position.
