Peace marathon to celebrate Golden Jubilee

Accra, Oct. 11, GNA - Ahenti Management an event management company in Accra has initiated an event 'The Golden Jubilee Peace Marathon' as part of activities marking Ghana's Golden Jubilee celebrations next year.

The event would be the highlight on Ghana's Republic Day on July 1, 2007.

A release issued in Accra on Wednesday and signed by Barima Adu-Asamoa, Chief Executive Officer of Ahenti Management said the marathon was to foster national peace and harmony and celebrate the efforts of those who ensured peace in the country's history. It was in addition, to celebrate the efforts of Ghanaians for holding their peace at critical junctures of the country's history, endorsed the prospect of future peace and harmonious co-existence for future generations and reaffirmed Ghana as a pace setter in nation building.

The release said the marathon (Peace convoy bearing the peace torch) would be inaugurated at Bolgatanga, in the Upper East Region on Saturday, May 12, 2007 by Vice President Aliu Mahama. It said the torch would pass through each regional capital, received by Paramount Chiefs and people in each region at mini durbars and messages of peace delivered as well as the lighting of local peace flame during its 50 days journey to Accra.

The release said the torch would reach Accra on Sunday, July 1, 2007 at the Independence Square to be received by President John Agyekum Kufuor who would light the Eternal Peace Flame.

"The marathon route would pass through the birthplace of all Ghanaian political rulers since attaining independence," it added. It said five individuals including two physically challenged persons selected nationwide, from each of the 10 regions would be selected to bear the peace torch.

The release said Ghanaians living abroad were also eligible to apply to bear the torch.

It said application forms would be available at all regional radio station and other outlets by Monday, October 30. 11 Oct. 06
