Sportsman of the Year: Ignatius Gaisah

Ghana's first and only World Athletes Championship silver medalist, Ignatius Gaisah, has been selected as GhanaWeb?s sportsman of the year.

In 2005, Gaisah won a silver medal in the long jump at the World Championships in Helsinki with a national record leap of 8.34m. Gaisah equaled his own record a month later in Shangai, China and finished the season third in the IAAF ranking

Gaisah was selected ahead of soccer players Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah.

Heptathlon sensation Simpson Margaret is the sportswoman of the year.

Simpson, who won Ghana?s first ever medal at the World Athletics Championship after claiming a bronze medal in Helsinki and also setting a new African heptathlon record with 6423 points in Austria in May.. She finished the year as the world?s fourth best heptathlete.
