Athletes Association uncovers questionable performances

Ghana Athletes Association has discovered possible errors in the performances reported for a former Ghanaian athlete, Samuel Okantey over last season (2002) and for this season (2003). In a dramatic turn of events, Okantey’s top performances for last year and this year have been revised after an investigation by the athletics statistical site, www.tilastopaja.com.

Okantey currently competes for Ireland and was listed as having jumped 17.19 meters in the triple jump in 2002 and 17.11 meters thus far in 2003. However, the indications are that his actual performance was about one meter less. Oknatey was inadvertently listed as the current world leader in the triple jump for most of last week (13th Jan – 19th Jan). His name has been subsequently removed from the current world list pending further investigation.

If this revision stands, then Okantey’s ranking on Ghana’s All-Time triple jump list is actually 4th (16.69 meters in Algeria, 2002) instead of 2nd (17.19 meters, in dispute)

Furthermore, the revised world rankings now show Ghana’s triple jump record holder Andrew Owusu as the current world number one (16.64 meters) for the early part of the 2003 season. This revision implies that Owusu has actually been world number one in the triple jump for the past six weeks (Dec 8th 2002 – Jan 22nd 2003).

More information will be forthcoming based on the ongoing investigation.
