Abuja 2003: Myles-Mills Qualify

Abuja - Title holder Leonard Myles-Mills of Ghana and three Nigerians moved to the next round of a high-quality men's 100 metres at the All Africa Games .

Myles-Mills, who clocked 9.99 seconds to win gold in Johannesburg four years ago, is up against Nigerian sub-10 second sprinters Deji Aliu and Uchenna Emedolu.

Ghana's medal hopefuls in the women's 100 metres - Vida Anim — also qualified for the next round on Saturday.

Other qualifiers include Mary Omagbemi, Endurance Ojokolo and Emem Edem (Nigeria), Aminata Diouf of Senagal, Justine Bayiga of Uganda and Bertille Delphine of Cameroon.

Meseret Defar underlined the global dominance of the Ethiopian women in the 5 000 metres, while Nigeria's Vivian Chukwuemeka set a new All Africa Games record in winning the women's shot put on Saturday.

Defar upheld her country's proud distance-running tradition by winning gold in the 5 000 metres, and she beat the recently crowned world champion and fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba in the process.

The Ethiopian's winning time was 16 minutes 42.00 seconds, while Dorcas Inzikuru of Uganda picked up the silver and Dibaba had to settle for third.

Chukwuemeka threw 18.12 metres to win the gold medal, erasing the mark of 16.72 metres she recorded in Johannesburg four years ago.

Veronica Abrahamse of South Africa won silver with 15.77 metres, while Wafa Esmail of Egypt took the bronze.

South African Chris Harmse won the men's hammer with 75.17 metres, with the silver and bronze medals going to Sabeur Souid of Tunisia and Samir Ouan of Algeria.
