Presidential Advisor for Special Duties and National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairperson for Kayunga District, Moses Karangwa, has died in a road crash along the Kayunga-jinja highway.
The crash happened on Sunday at around 8pm when the driver of his official double-cabin vehicle lost control and overturned at Ssuka.
His daughter, Jacky Birungi, said on Monday morning that her father was returning from Jinja to Kayunga.
He died at Nakasero Hospital, where he had been transferred from Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital.
The Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, who officially announced Karangwa's demise commended him for his unwavering loyalty to the NRM party.
"It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of the Senior Presidential Advisor and Chairperson of NRM Kayunga District, Moses Karangwa Kalisa, following a tragic accident. He was a valued member of our mighty party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), and he will be remembered for his loyalty to the party. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time," Babalanda posted on her X platform in the wee hours of Monday.
According to a police source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the driver of the Toyota Double Cabin was trying to dodge a motorcycle rider who had abruptly entered the road and lost control.
The source said the vehicle overturned several times, but the cyclist was unhurt.
"The NRM boss was with his two bodyguards in the vehicle, and both of them survived with minor injuries, including the driver of the vehicle", the police officer said.
He added that: ‘’After the nasty accident, Karangwa was whisked to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital on a motorcycle from where he received some treatment before he was transferred to Nakasero Hospital, where he died moments later.’’
Prossy Naava, the Kayunga Town Council councillor who has been a close confidant of Karangwa, said she had just met the deceased in Kayunga Town, who was later driven to the Jinja side, but a few minutes later heard that he had had an accident.
Karangwa, a prominent businessman who last month graduated with a diploma in social work and social administration from Kampala University, was also pursuing a degree in Business Administration.
A political godfather to many in Kayunga district, Karangwa's last public appearance was on Friday last week when he attended the swearing in of Kayunga district Chairperson Andrew Muwonge and his councillors.
Karangwa has been the most feared politician in Kayunga district, almost dictating who could be the RDC and DPC.
His excellent mobilisation skills for the ruling party made him a darling of President Museveni, who late last year appointed him his Senior presidential advisor for special duties.
Muwonge described the deceased as a selfless party loyalist who always responded when a call came to mobilise for the party.
Last week, Karangwa, while speaking to the media, vowed to fight corruption in the district during this term, especially the alleged sale of jobs.
The body was still at Mulago National Referral Hospital by Monday morning.
