Police in Budaka District have arrested a Ugandan businessman of Indian origin in connection with a road crash that claimed the life of a staff member of Bugwere High School.
The incident, registered at Budaka Police Station under TSD 05/21/03/26 and TAR 18/26, occurred on March 21, 2026, at around 2 pm at Nansanga Kubiri along the Mbale-Tirinyi Road.
Robert Wamani, a 42-year-old cook at the school and a resident of Bukomba Village in Lyama Town Council, Budaka District, died on the spot after being knocked down by a speeding vehicle.
According to ASP Wilfred Kyempasa, the Bukedi North Regional Police Spokesperson, it is alleged that the driver of motor vehicle registration number UBE 858 Y was traveling from Mbale towards Kampala when he knocked Wamani, who was walking along the road from the Budaka side.
"The driver did not stop at the scene after the crash but was later intercepted at Tirinyi checkpoint," ASP Kyempasa said.
The driver has been identified as Rabadiya Sandeep Ramji, a 41-year-old Indian national and site supervisor with Hariom Establishment Ltd. Ramji, a resident of Kiyindi Zone, Nakulabye in Rubaga Division, is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Police say the suspected cause of the crash was speeding.
A team from Budaka Police Station, led by AIP Talunga Topista, the District Traffic Officer, visited and documented the scene.
The body of the deceased was conveyed to Budaka Health Centre IV mortuary pending postmortem examination.
The vehicle involved in the crash has since been towed and parked at
Tirinyi Police Station is pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
