Police in Gulu City are holding two men on allegations of illegal possession of 30 live rounds of ammunition.

The duo, identified as Joshua Opwomungu, 18, and Willy Kilama, 40, were picked up on Sunday by the police from the home of Bernard Ouma Oweka, in Pece Prison Cell, Pece-Laroo division, Gulu City, where they were caretaking.

Police say the arrest followed an intelligence-led report. A security search at the home where they were residing led to the recovery of a loaded magazine with 30 live rounds of ammunition.

Aswa West Police Spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong said during an interview on Monday that more investigation is being conducted into the matter.

“Preliminary information alleges that, on February 15, 2026 at around 0700hrs at Pece prison cell, Prison ward, Laroo-Pece Division in Gulu City, one Ouma Benard Oweka reported to Gulu City East Police Station about a loaded magazine he found under his bed wrapped in a white cover as he was cleaning his room prompting him to report the matter to Police,” Aswa West Police Spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong told our reporter on Monday.

According to Ouma, he had entrusted the suspects to take care of his home, but upon return, he noticed the strange item.

Mudong says police detectives are actively investigating the matter.

“The police detectives are actively building up the case file by recording statements from the suspects and other relevant sources, exhibits of evidential values to wit, a loaded magazine with 30 rounds has been recovered and documented.’’ He noted.

In August 2025, security agencies in Lamwo District, Northern Uganda, arrested two men for allegedly trafficking firearms from Uganda into South Sudan, across the porous borders.

The suspects identified as Isaac Okunga, 27, a resident of Lira District, and Gabriel Lokoroma, a resident of Lamwo District, were intercepted at the Waligo Checkpoint, between Uganda and South Sudan border.

They were transporting the Sub-Machine Gun, serial number 25456.

The army said the pair were attempting to smuggle the weapon from Uganda to South Sudan when they were caught.
