Police in Adjumani District, West Nile Sub-region, have arrested a 35-year-old woman following a fatal fight with her co-wife on Valentine’s Day.
Jane Baatio is detained after she allegedly fought with 34-year-old Ahmad Zakia in Egge Village, Ajugopi Parish, Dzaip Sub-county, Adjumani District, following a misunderstanding.

Zakia died in the hospital where she had been rushed with grave injuries after the fight on Saturday night.
Police said that at around 10 pm on February 14, 2026, Ahmad Maiku convened a meeting with local elders to address an issue involving his wives, Baatio and Baatio.

“During the meeting, both women began behaving disruptively and refused to adhere to the proceedings. As a result, the meeting was suspended by their father-in-law, Swaib Kanaa, who instructed the women to leave the premises as the meeting was postponed,” said North West Nile Region police spokesperson, SP Collins Asea.

While leaving the compound, a physical altercation erupted between the two women during which Baatio overpowered Zakia, squeezing her neck.

“Zakia suffocated during the physical confrontation. Witnesses intervened, rescuing Zakia and rushing her to Nyumanzi Health Center III for medical attention. Despite efforts to save her, Zakia succumbed to her injuries around midnight,” SP Asea added.

According to him, police responded promptly to the scene, arrested Baatio, and transported Zakia’s body to the Adjumani General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.

“The scene was thoroughly documented and inspected by the homicide investigation team. We call upon community leaders to foster peace and organize community meetings aimed at conflict resolution to prevent future occurrences of this nature,” he said.
