Six teenagers died and 19 others were injured during a fire that broke out in a prison in Cairo, two security and justice officials told AFP this Friday, June 4.

"A fire broke out on the afternoon of Thursday June 3 in a penitentiary for teenagers in the al-Marg neighbourhood (East of the capital), six died and 19 were injured, the security officer told AFP, speaking anonymously.

The director of the establishment, which takes in around 200 girls aged 14 to 17, was immediately arrested, said the head of security.

The Public Ministry authorized the delivery of the remains to the victims' families.

Last March, at least 20 people died from a fire in a textile factory located in East Cairo.

In December 2020, seven patients lost their lives because of a fire that broke out in a hospital located in the north of the capital.
