A photo of one of the oldest mosques in Nigeria, Shitta-Bey Mosque located in the commercial capital of Lagos, has caused a stir on social media.

The picture which was recently shared by the official Twitter page of the state government has since received several comments with some commending the strength of the building.

Others are expressing doubts over when the structure was built but according to the post, the mosque was built in 1892 and is one of the oldest mosques in Nigeria.

The mosque was designated as a national monument by the Nigerian Commission for Museums and Monuments in the year 2013.

It was founded by Sierra Leonean-born Nigerian, Mohammed Shitta and has been considered one of Nigeria's most important historical infrastructures.
