Ugandan politician Bobi Wine has announced the withdrawal of an election petition challenging the outcome of last month's presidential election won by president Yoweri Museveni.

Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, said the move was as a result of bias on the part of the Supreme Court.

He disclosed that with the withdrawal from the courts, the case is to be taken to public court since Ugandan courts have failed to show that they are independent but instead continue to work for the incumbent president.

At the last sitting as of last week, the court rejected a bid to file more affidavits in support of Bobi Wine's case.

The former National Unity Platform flag bearer petitioned the Supreme Court on February 1 to declare that Mr Museveni was not validly elected since the elections body did not follow the law in conducting the poll.

The elections of January 14 had a bloody campaign season preceding it. It was also conducted amid a communications blackout across the country.

Museveni, who has been president since 1986, was declared the winner of the January 14 poll with 59% of the vote against opposition leader Bobi Wine's 35%.
