A mother and her three-year-old daughter were killed early Sunday when a trailer detached from a moving truck and crashed into a roadside building along the Kampala–Gulu Highway in Luwero District, police confirmed.
The crash occurred at about 6:00 am in Ngogolo Village, Butuntumula Sub-county, involving a Mercedes-Benz truck and trailer, registration numbers SSD 908A and SSD 909A.
Police identified the deceased as Annet Nandyose, 38, and her daughter Doreen Nakazi, who both died at the scene.
Two other people, Samuel Kigwe, the father, and a juvenile identified as Jovan Kalule, were critically injured and rushed to Luwero Hospital for treatment.
Savannah regional police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima said preliminary investigations indicate the truck was travelling from Gulu towards Kampala when the trailer detached, veered off the road,d and rammed into a building.
“The rear trailer detached and struck a roadside structure, killing two people and injuring others,” he said.
Eyewitness Rashid Mulima said the incident happened suddenly.
“I saw the trailer break off from the truck and ram straight into the house. The driver stopped a few metres ahead,” he explained to Monitor.
The crash also destroyed property, including a photo studio belonging to Fred Ntambi, who estimated his losses at about Shs15 million.
“Everything I had built is gone,” Ntambi said.
Family members said the deaths have left several children without parental care. Marvin Nakibinge, a teenager, said the victims’ mother had been the family’s primary caregiver.
“My mother left me and five others,” he noted.
Police said the bodies were taken to Luwero Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination, while the truck was impounded pending inspection.
Local leaders who spoke to a Monitor reporter at the scene called for improved road safety measures along the busy highway that has claimed over five lives since March 10, 2026.
Geoffrey Matovu, the area LCIII councillor, urged the government to install protective barriers.
“We cannot keep losing lives like this,” he said.
The Kampala–Gulu Highway is one of Uganda’s busiest transport corridors and has recorded multiple fatal crashes, often linked to speeding and mechanical failure.
Investigations are ongoing.
