The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has banned handshakes between players before the start of a match.

The TFF said it was following advice issued by the ministry of health as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus.

On Tuesday, photos showing Tanzanian President John Magufuli exchanging a foot greeting with an opposition leader, instead of a handshake, became a social media sensation.

There are so far no confirmed cases of coronavirus in the East African nation.

It is not yet known exactly how coronavirus spreads from person to person. However, similar viruses are spread via droplets, such as those produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

So, coughing and sneezing into tissues, not touching your face with unwashed hands, and trying to avoid close contact with infected people are important.
