Social media revels as snow blankets Lesotho and parts of South Africa

• Parts of southern Africa has experienced snow in the last few days

• The mountanious nation of Lesotho and the east of South Africa are affected

• Lodge operators are bemoaning the impact of COVID-19 on usual tourist inflows

Social media users are sharing snowy photos and videos from parts of southern Africa, specifically South Africa and Lesotho.

The South African Weather Service warned of cold temperatures in the eastern parts of the country earlier this week.

And true to their caution, some parts of two provinces - KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape - as well as neighbouring Lesotho experienced heavy snowfall earlier this week.

Local media outlets reported that the Maluti mountains in Lesotho were covered in a blanket of snow on Tuesday morning, the first winter snowfall for the tiny landlocked nation.

"The snow started to fall at around 22:00 on Monday. And when we woke up, two centimetres [of snow] had fallen overnight," Jonathan Halse, a lodge operator told News24 on Tuesday.

The snowfall attracts visitors from in and outside the country year in - year out but this year, visits has fallen as the tourism indstry recovers from the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.
