Nigerian governor escapes unhurt after armed attack by herders

Governor Samuel Ortom of Nigeria's Benue State today escaped unhurt when armed herders reportedly opened fire on his convoy.

Multiple local media portals and a Twitter handle reportedly operated by the state government said the governor was on his way to the state capital Makurdi when the incident occured.

His security deatil repelled the attack which took place at the Tyo-Mu community in the outskirts of Makurdi.

The Cable a local newspaper reported that the Governor confirmed during a press conference that he had been attacked by about who is still in shock was being herdsmen. He praised his security detail of six officers who repelled the attack.

Ortom, has in recent times made very strong statements about the operations of herders calling for the arrest of the leader of a national herders group, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.

“Anyone who is not willing to respect the laws of our land should go and meet Bala Mohammed, and there you can carry AK-47, and you’ll not be apprehended. Here, when you come, we’ll apprehend you. I want this to be known,” he had said.
