Meet Charlotte the 1st Queen of England who was a 'Black' woman

Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, originally named Sophie Charlotte was the first Queen of England who emerged from Africa.

Queen Charlotte was the last daughter of Princess Elizabeth Albertine Saxe-Hildburghausen and Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, otherwise known as Prince of Mirow.

The Queen was Black because she was a descendant of a branch of a Portuguese royal family that was Black. Specifically, Queen Charlotte came from Alfonso III and his concubine, Ourana, who was a black Moor.

It happened in the 13th century when Alfonso III seized a town named Faro and placed a request that the governor of Faro’s daughter become his concubine.

His request was successful and Alfonso III together with the concubine gave birth to three children.

When she was only 17, a marriage was arranged between Charlotte and King George III. At the age of 22, King George inherited the throne after the death of his grandfather which made Queen Charlotte become the first Black Queen of England.

The wedding took place on September 8, 1761, after Charlotte spent several months at sea travelling from Germany to London.

On August 12, 1762, the King and Queen welcomed their first child, a son, the Prince of Wales who later became King George IV.
