A Madiba Senior Secondary School teacher was this week treated for minor injuries at Mahalapye Hospital after being assaulted by a pupil.

In an interview with BOPA, Mahalapye station commander, Superintendent Omphile Malemenyane said the incident ensued on February 3 when the teacher asked the boy to tuck in his shirt as per the school dress code.

Superintendent Malemeyane said the teacher, who was on duty for the day, had found the pupil in another class and asked him to move to his rightful class and in the process noticed his shirt was not tucked in.

He said the teacher ordered the student to tuck in his shirt whereupon the latter attacked the former.

The teacher, who sustained minor injuries, was rescued and escorted to the staffroom by another pupil.

He was treated and discharged the same day.

The boy, being a minor, was interviewed in the presence of his parents at the police station.

Superintendent Malemeyane said usually cases involving a pupil or minor were referred to social workers for intervention.

He said though these types of cases were common, this was the first one registered this year.

The station commander encouraged parents to be involved in their children’s daily lives as well as to keep an eye on them.

He said pupils should know that schools were places of learning and creating better futures for themselves not spots for antisocial activities.

Schools were encouraged to invite the police to Parents and Teachers’ Association meetings.
