Newborn baby gorillas in Rwanda have received their names, with one bestowed by Hollywood star Idris Elba and his wife during an annual celebration aimed at promoting conservation and tourism.

The naming ceremony, known as Kwita Izina, unfolded in the picturesque town of Kinigi, nestled beneath towering volcanoes, BBC reports.

This region is home to the rare and endangered mountain gorillas, drawing personalities from various fields such as activism, sports, politics, film, philanthropy, and fashion.

Last year's Kwita Izina ceremony even saw virtual participation from British royalty, with the then Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, naming a baby gorilla Ubwuzuzanye, which signifies "harmony" in Kinyarwanda.

This year, 23 baby gorillas received their names in the presence of key figures:

Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina chose the name Narame, which means "long life."
Former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Bernard Lama named a gorilla Ramba, signifying "sustainable."

Local environmental activist Grace Ineza selected the name Bigwi, translating to "achiever."

British MP Andrew Mitchell opted for the name Mukundwa, denoting "favoured."
Additionally, US comedian Kevin Hart participated virtually and christened one of the babies with the name Gakondo, meaning "traditional."
