Gunmen target newlywed couple in deadly attack in Cameroon

Cameroon Cameroon

Unidentified gunmen have unleashed violence, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people, including a newly married couple in Cameroon's largest English-speaking city, BBC.com reports

The attackers arrived at a bustling junction in Bamenda, arriving in unmarked vehicles and swiftly ordering residents to the ground. However, chaos ensued as panicked individuals attempted to flee, prompting the gunmen to open fire indiscriminately.

Eyewitnesses report that the assailants accused the victims of being "black legs," insinuating their collaboration with the government or their failure to comply with separatist orders.

Bamenda has become a hotspot in the conflict between rebels seeking the establishment of Ambazonia, a separate country for English-speaking regions, and the Cameroonian government. This clash has been ongoing since 2017.

Just one day prior to these tragic shootings, security forces had targeted a residence in the Nacho neighborhood, claiming the lives of five young men.

The situation in the region is rapidly deteriorating, with alarming reports of human rights abuses and atrocities committed by both sides
