The City of Ekurhuleni is home to over three million residents, and like any city, it requires a significant amount of funding to ensure the smooth running of essential services such as water, electricity, and sanitation. These services are funded primarily through rates and taxes paid by the city's residents. However, like many municipalities, Ekurhuleni faces the challenge of defaulting ratepayers, who owe the city millions of rands in unpaid bills.

In response to this challenge, the Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the city of Ekurhuleni, Mr. Kagiso Lerutla CA(SA) has launched a credit control campaign aimed at collecting outstanding payments from defaulting ratepayers. The campaign, which is part of the city's broader revenue collection strategy, involves identifying and contacting those who have not paid their bills and encouraging them to settle their outstanding balances.

The credit control campaign is being conducted through a variety of channels, including SMS reminders, email communications, and targeted home visits. The aim of the campaign is not just to collect outstanding payments but also to promote a culture of payment in the city, where residents understand the importance of paying their bills on time and in full.

According to Mr. Lerutla, the credit control campaign has already yielded positive results, with an increase in the number of residents settling their outstanding balances. In addition, the GCFO has been engaging with the city's leadership to ensure that the campaign is given the necessary resources to succeed. This includes partnering with community leaders and local organizations to drive home the importance of paying rates and taxes on time.

The credit control campaign is not the only initiative being implemented by Mr. Lerutla to improve revenue collection in Ekurhuleni. The GCFO is also working to modernize the city's billing system, which will make it easier for residents to pay their bills online and receive automated reminders about upcoming payments. This move is expected to increase the efficiency of the billing system and reduce the risk of human error.

The credit control campaign led by Mr. Kagiso Lerutla, the Group Chief Financial Officer of Ekurhuleni, is an important step towards improving revenue collection and promoting a culture of payment in the city. By engaging with defaulting ratepayers and encouraging them to settle their outstanding balances, Mr. Lerutla and his team are making a significant contribution to the smooth running of essential services in the city. With continued support and investment in initiatives such as these, Ekurhuleni can look forward to a more sustainable and prosperous future.
