The group chief financial officer (CFO) of the City of Ekurhuleni, Mr Kagiso Lerutla CA(SA), has urged struggling residents to register for the city's indigent programme.

The programme is designed to provide financial relief to those who are unable to pay for basic services such as water, electricity, and sanitation.

The indigent programme is intended to assist residents who are living below the poverty line or experiencing financial hardship due to unforeseen circumstances. The programme is means-tested, and those who qualify can receive a discount or exemption on their monthly municipal bills.

In a recent statement, Mr Lerutla emphasized the importance of registering for the indigent programme, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Many households have experienced financial strain due to job losses, reduced income, and increased expenses, and the indigent programme can provide much-needed relief.

To qualify for the programme, residents must provide proof of income and undergo a means test. Those who qualify can receive discounts on their monthly municipal bills. In addition to financial relief, the indigent programme also provides other benefits such as access to emergency services and funeral support.

Mr Lerutla has encouraged residents who are struggling to make ends meet to register for the indigent programme as soon as possible. He has also assured residents that their information will be kept confidential and that the city will work to process applications as quickly as possible.

The indigent programme is part of the City of Ekurhuleni's broader efforts to address poverty and inequality in the municipality. The city has also introduced other initiatives such as job creation programmes, small business support, and affordable housing projects.

Mr Lerutla’s call for struggling residents to register for the indigent programme is a reminder that municipalities have a responsibility to support their most vulnerable citizens. By providing financial relief and other benefits, the indigent programme can help to alleviate some of the hardship that residents are facing. It is important that those who qualify take advantage of the programme and that municipalities continue to prioritize initiatives that support social and economic well-being.
