Cameroon warns against election chaos

The government of Cameroon has warned it will deal "firmly" with those planning to disrupt the 9 February elections, amid threats from separatists to stop voting in two English-speaking provinces.

The government has deployed heavy security in the Anglophone regions, with the latest being 800 military police officers sent to secure two towns in the northwest and southwest of the capital, Yaoundé.

Separatist fighters have announced they will restrict access in anglophone regions for one week beginning 7 February to stop voting from taking place.

Cameroonians will elect parliamentarians and municipal councillors in the elections.

The Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji has warned that security agencies will deal firmly with those who sabotage the elections..

Police patrolling the English-speaking regions have in the past been accused of brutality.
