Ghana is not a football country – Ex-Ashantigold striker Shaibu Yakubu

Former Ashantigold striker Shaibu Yakubu has said that the meager salaries paid to players plying their trade in the local scene does not make the country a football nation.

The former Ghana Premier League goal king in an interview with Don Summer of Angel FM in Kumasi indicated that, he will on any day accept a move abroad rather than playing in the GPL that lacks financial power.

Shaibu, who has recovered from an injury recounting the salary he was taking during his stint with the Obuasi based club revealed that he was receiving GHC60 and is of the view there hasn’t been any increase in salary and for that matter, he will consider traveling for greener pastures.

He downplayed people assertions that Ghana is a football.

“It would have been prudent for players at the twilight of their career to return home and make the league attractive but clubs in Ghana are not financially strong. When you go South Africa and other African countries they do it. A typical example is Benny McCarthy”

“Many people think Ghana is a football country but I don’t see it that way. In a way, it is a football country just because the players are doing good on the field that is why people think that way”

“Even Equatorial Guinea is able to pay better salaries to players. So I think the Ghana league has not been attractive because of salary issues. Experience players are unwilling to return to the GPL all because of wages”
