Former Hearts of Oak Board Chairman, Emmanuel Martey Commodore Mensah has said that self-styled player managers and agents are responsible for the drop in the standard of play in the Ghana Premier League.

Commodore Mensah believes the case of mass player exodus is a major problem bedeviling the local game as the terrain gets easily robbed off emerging talents.

He has lamented that the rate at which players who are endearing themselves to local football fans are hurriedly sold to clubs abroad thereby killing interest in the local game.

“If you visit the stadium to watch local matches, which player is the star attraction…If the interest will come back, we need to nurture the players and let them stay together for 2-3 years before they can leave for foreign deals” Commodore Mensah told Asempa FM.

Commodore Mensah blamed the situation partly on soi-disant(self-styled) player managers who only sell players for the money without properly weighing the pros and cons of such moves.

“Again the so-called managers are not helping. Almost everybody wants to be a player-manager; everyone wants to sell their player. So if any offer at all comes, then the player leaves. That is one of the problems (bedeviling the game)”, he concluded.
