Former Board Chairman of Asante Kotoko, John Agyekum Kufuor has added his voice to the growing concerns on the meagre salaries of Ghanaian footballers who ply their trade on the local scene.

The meagre salaries of locally-based players which are often not paid promptly at the end of every month are the major reason why the players and Ghanaians were vividly against the pay cut policy which was proposed by some clubs in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Media reports indicate that some Ghana Premier League clubs pay as low as GH¢200 to their players monthly.

John Agyekum Kufour, who was President of Ghana between 2000 to 2008 has told the clubs to care for the players financially and also make sure that player insurance has been done.

“We should take good care of our players and pay them very well. We need to ensure our players because football always goes with injuries. If we don’t insure the players and injuries sets in, it will go a long way to affect the player,” he told Manhyia Palace based Opemsour FM.

He also believes that the country is not getting the best from locally based players because they are poorly paid.

“Elsewhere, football is business. Players earn more than doctors and lawyers. Here, footballers are not even receiving GHC1, 000 a month. How can they play their heart out and make a living? We need to look after our footballers well,” he added.
