Chief Executive Officer of Bechem United, Professor Nana Kwasi Darlington has revealed that his outfit has paid advance salaries to the playing body in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Many football clubs in the country, including giants Asante Kotoko are pushing for players to accept pay cuts to help the clubs balance their financial books since they have lost their main source of revenue (gate proceeds) due to the indefinite suspension of the league.

However, Premier League side Bechem United have done the opposite by paying advance salaries to their players to help them cater for themselves and their families in these trying times.

In an interview with Kumasi FM, Professor Darlington said they cannot compare the financial situation in Europe to that of Ghana hence they cannot reduce the salaries of their players like it is being done in the more established leagues where players earn astronomical figures as salaries.

“It is true we have offered a salary advance payment option to the players amid the suspension of the league due to the coronavirus”

“Our chairman has an aim of changing lives through football and so he decided to do that for the players in other to ease them of the difficulties that come with the coronavirus pandemic”

“We cannot compare our economy to the big clubs but if our club owner is making donations to the Bechem community during this period, why not help his players?.

“He knows we are not in normal times and it’s a difficult situation which is the reason why he’s decided to offer the players an advance salary payment option,” Professor Darlington concluded.
