Black Princesses player Sandra Owusu Ansah's knee ‘rots’ away

The future of Black Princesses attacker, Sandra Owusu Ansah hangs in the balance as a knee injury she suffered while on national assignment at the 2014 Women’s Under 17 World Cup in Costa Rica continues to keep her off the pitch.

The 19-year old attacker, who is also the skipper of the National Women’s Under 20 side, the Black Princesses says she had had to conceal the effects of the injury to play for the country at various levels since 2014.

Sandra Owusu Ansah captained the Black Maidens at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals in Jordan.

“I got injured at the under 17 World Cup in Costa Rica; it was not severe as it is now so I concealed it and went ahead to play the next world cup in Jordan and then at the under 20 level at Papua New Guinea under Coach Masuud Didi Dramani and then in France”, she said in an interview with Jeffrey Amoah Sunzu on Kumasi-based Angel FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

The player was ruled out of the 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nation hosted by Ghana due to the injury set back which impact escalated at a training session prior to the tournament.

She has since been off the pitch, forfeiting a lot of opportunities to land contracts with clubs, a situation she said has made her cash-strapped, since she has no other trade than soccer.

“All the coaches and doctors at the national teams know of the situation and have promised to help me undergo a surgery to correct the anomaly, but no help has been forthcoming”, she said.

“I have spoken with the authorities at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the team doctor but funds are yet to be released as promised”, she revealed.

The player says doctors have estimated the surgery to cost GHC20,000 and would be able to fully recover within 6 weeks.

The promising young striker was adjudged Best Player of the Match in Ghana’s 2-2 draw with France in their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Group C match at Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea in November 2016.
