GDFA launches Deaf Football Gala

The Ghana Deaf Football Association (GDFA) has launched the 2019 Deaf Football Gala.

The gala, which was last held in 2015 would resume on Saturday, May 25, at the Accra Sports Stadium with eight teams participating.

Mr. Johnson Mahama, President of the GDFA, said at the press launch that, the competition went on break due to financial challenges, but was grateful to some sponsors who have made its return possible.

He said that the gala would serve as a platform to select players into the national team Black Wonders.

Mr. Johnson said the Black Wonders needed quality players participate in the West Africa Deaf Football tournament in Sierra Leone in September this year.

Mr Mahama said the gala also would help unravel potentials who would win Ghana win laurels in international competitions and called on the public to support them.

Mr. Wilson Abedu, Deputy Director General (Technical) of the National Sports Authority (NSA), pledged of the Authority’s support for the competition.

He unveiled a giant trophy for the gala and commended the GDFA for bringing the competition back.

Mr.Kingsley Kweku Asah, who served as Chairman for the occasion said the competition was a great opportunity to the deaf community.

He called on the corporate world to support the sustainability of the gala.

The second edition of the Deaf Football Gala have eight out of the 16 registered deaf teams confirming their participation in the one-day event.

They list include; Tema Deaf FC, Western Warrior DFC, (Takoradi), Kasoa DFC, Red Star DFC (Asamankese), Ambassador DFC, Heart of Wolf DFC, Shining Star DFC and Ashanti Glitters Stars DFC.

For the first round fixtures are; Western Warrior DFC will face Ambassador DFC, Tema DFC will face Heart of Wolf DFC, Kasoa DFC battle Ashanti DFC while Red Star DFC engages Shining Star DFC. Winners of each game would progress to the semi-final before the final game with the gala expected to commence at 8am.

Winners of the gala would receive a trophy and medal for each member of the team.

The gala is sponsored by BBphylls Protocol with support from JL Properties, Chrissah Media Foundation and K. Appiah Motors.
