The national armwrestling team, Golden Arms, has set a national record as the national team to win as many as 88 medals in one championship.
The team won 31 gold medals, 32 silver medals and 25 bronze medals to win the overall trophy at the just ended ninth Africa Armwrestling Championship held in Accra.
A previous record was held by the national weightlifting team, Black Cranes, about four years ago when they won a total of 19 medals at an Africa Weightlifting Championship in Morocco.
The Golden Arms broke that record last year after winning 22 medals in Lagos, Nigeria at the eighth Africa Armwrestling Championship but has broken their own record.
The ninth edition of the Africa Armwrestling Championship held at the DG Hathramani Sports Hall saw countries competing in both left and right arm battle for laurels.
Nigeria finished second to Ghana on the medal table with a total of 14 medals (six gold, six silver and two bronze medals) while Mali finished third with 10 medals (six gold and four silver medals).
Speaking to the media, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), Charles Osei Asibey, said “I’m elated we made a good impression at this international meeting to make our host and win tagline a reality.
“This will enhance development and bring government's attention to the sport of Armwrestling.”
The event was sponsored by Go On Energy Drink, K-Balm Ointment, i-Level media, Erata Hotel, Eagle Extra Stout, Aayalolo, Royal Parlour, Uncle T Malt, Henry’s Inn, AMA, MoYS, NSA and Wonak Abie Enterprise.
