As he prepares for his third World Cup tournament, Uruguay striker Luis Suarez looks back on his headline-making debut in South Africa eight years ago.

In the quarterfinal fixture against Ghana, the then Ajax ace became the talk of town as he slapped out goal-bound effort on the line to deny the Black Stars a 2-1 win at the depth of extra-time.

His action led to a straight red card while Ghana were awarded a penalty which Asamoah Gyan unfortunately missed. The game eventually ended in a shootout won by Uruguay 4-2.

"When Ghana missed the penalty, Sebastian Eguren gave me a hug," Suarez told Kicker.

"On the way to the cabin [after receiving the red card], I was very down.

"A lot of things went through my head. Shit, red, we're leaving! A feeling of pain.

"But Seba stopped me, so I was out of the player's tunnel and was able to see them miss the penalty."

Uruguay, however, bowed out of the tournament in the semis following a 3-2 defeat to the Netherlands.

This year, Uruguay have been pitted against Egypt, Russia and Saudi Arabia in Group A.
