Accra, Aug. 22, GNA - This year's Mobitel Hockey Knock-Out competition would receive a sponsorship package of 25 million cedis, an increase of 60 percent from last year's sponsorship.

Mr Stanley Okoh, General Manager, Sales and Marketing of Millicom Ghana Limited announced this at the launch of this year's event in Accra on Saturday.

He said the company decided to sponsor the competition as its policy of contributing to the community in which it operates. Twelve teams are to take part in the competition. They include NDK Financiers, Multi Stix, Citizens, Reformers (Men and Women), Veterans and Ghana Police (Men and Women).

The rest are Exchequers, Golden Sticks, Trustees, CEPS (Men and Women), Extinguishers and Mariners.

Mr Okoh said the sponsorship of the event which started some five years ago, has generated interest over the years.

He said the game of hockey and the other lesser-known sports need maximum support to encourage the sports men and women rise to greater competitive levels.

Mr Okoh said the lesser known sports which had been neglected often win some medals for Ghana in competitions and called on other corporate bodies to help develop them.

Awards would be presented for the Best Player (Men and Women), Most Promising Player and the Best Umpire (Men and Women). In the opening match, Financiers edged out Multi Stix 5-4 on penalties.
