Asere clan win Homowo Regatta Race

Accra, July 3, GNA - The Asere Clan of the James Town community in Accra on Tuesday emerged winners of this years Homowo Regatta race at the Sempe Beach, James Town, Accra. The competition was organised by the people of the James Town community to herald the Annual Homowo Festival with the Asere Clan announcing their dominance in the seven-clan competition right from the preliminary stages.

Competing in a red outfit, two groups from the clan won the first positions in the two preliminary rounds to qualify for the finals. The Sempe Clan who competed in a green outfit also placed third in the first round and took the second position in the second round to book their tickets for the finals whilst the Abola Clan dressed in a blue attire and Gbese Clan in an ash attire managed to place second and third positions respectively in the first and second rounds to make an entry into the finals.

In a breathtaking finals which had the Asere and Sempe Clans with two groups each competing, the Asere Clan once again maintained their dominance in the race by taking an early lead to finish the 500 meter rectangular race with 11 minutes and 12 seconds with the second set from the same clan clocking 12 minutes and 10 seconds to place second. The Gbese Clan picked the third position with 12 minutes and 30 seconds with the Sempe Clan settling for the fourth and fifth positions with a time of 12 minutes and 40 seconds and 13 minutes and 5 seconds respectively. The Abola Clan placed sixth in the race by clocking exactly 15 minutes to end the exciting event, which was witnessed by a cross section of people in and outside the community.
