Ghana's lightweight boxer Richard Commey says the country’s rich boxing history serves as a motivation to him whenever he mounts the ring to take on an opponent.

Ghana is blessed to have produced a tall list of great boxers like Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, DK Poison, Joshua Clottey, and Joseph Agbeko among others and Commey has expressed his desire to ink his name in the country’s history books by winning world titles.

“Ghana has a rich history of boxers like Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey, Azumah Nelson and Joshua Clottey and they are the ones I look up to. I just want to be like them, I just want to win world titles so that my name will be in the Ghanaian history books just like them".

"I have sparred with Joshua Clottey and he always encourages me. Everyone likes them (world champions) and people are dying to see a world champion. Being a world champion is something every Ghanaian wants to see”, he said.

With an impressive record of 27 fights, 25 wins and 2 losses, Commey is determined to add his name to the list of boxers of who have won Ghana world titles.

Commey is bent on redeeming his image and realising his dream of becoming a world champion after suffering controversial split decision losses to Robert Easter Jr for the vacant IBF lightweight title and against Denis Shafikov in an eliminator respectively.

Commey is currently in the US waiting for new date after his IBF lightweight world title eliminator against Alejandro Luna was postponed following an injury to the Mexican.
