Ghanaian-born English striker John Cofie, has been signed by Derry City.

The now 24-year-old player was bought by Manchester United for then world record of £1m from Burnley when he was just 14 despite interest interest from Chelsea and Liverpool.

However he failed to reach his full potential and has been moving from one club to another in the last couple of years.

Cofie played for Northern Premier League club Stalybridge Celtic before joining Derry City two days ago.

“Manchester United bought him, then he went to Royal Antwerp, Barnsley and Southport,” said Derry team manager Kenny Shiels.

“This is a good opportunity for him to resurrect his career.”

Cofie’s mates at the Manchester United youth team were Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard.
