AMTEC crowned champion at 2017 Asogli Yam Festival tennis tourney

Army Officers Tennis Club ( AMTEC) from Accra resisted stiff opposition from defending champion and host, Ho Tennis Club (HTC) to lift this year’s Asogli Yam Festival Tennis Tournament. The competition attracted 4 Tennis clubs ( Maritime Tennis Club from Nungua, TOR Tennis club, Army Officers Tennis Club- 37 and host Ho Tennis Club). This year’s edition of Asogli Tennis Tourney was massively patronized by tennis lovers in Ho. Stanbic Bank Ghana sponsored the Tournament with Ten Thousands Ghana Cedis.

In all, 12 games were played by each club and Ho Tennis Club won 4, whilst Amy Officers Tennis Club also won 4 wiith Regional Maritime Tennis Club also winning 3 and TOR with one win.

The host and Army Officers Tennis Club(AMTEC)qualified for the finals after both clubs defeated TOR Tennis and Regional Maritime Tennis Clubs. Five games also were played in the finals; Amy Officers Tennis Club won 3 and host Ho Tennis Club won 2.

In the singles final game, Ho Tennis Club’ George Heckson defeated Dr. Abraham Oppong from AMTEC 6-3 but the AMTEC responded very well as Samuel Shaibu ousted Dr. Eyram Bansah 6-1.

In the doubles competition, members of Ho tennis club could not hide their joy when their president Lieutenant Colonel Selorm was put on test with George Heckson and won 6-4 against George and Asomani. The doubles partners surmounted the challenge to the admiration of all. Some members trooped to the court after the game to congratulates Lt.Col Selorm and George Heckson.

But the host celebration was short lived as Dr. Abraham paired with Sammy to beat Captain of HTC Wise and Peter 6-3.



In the deciding game, Captain Felix Kabutey and Col. Akoto of Mess Tennis were too hot for their opponents Ho Tennis Club to contain and won 7-5 against Dr Eyram and David.

President of Ho Tennis Club, Lieutenant Colonel Selorm Kwasi Amengor, expressed the club’s appreciation to Stanbic Bank Ghana limited for supporting the tournament. He further thank the clubs for honoring the invitation and making the tournament very interesting.
