Sports Ministry to consider camping national teams at Cape Coast Stadium

Cape Cape

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah, has hinted that the Sports Ministry will soon take measures that will see to it that all the national teams camp at the Cape Coast Stadium.

He revealed this to the media on his inspection of facilities at the Cape Coast Stadium ahead of the start of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup of Nations, which begins next month.

Speaking to the press, he said, “Some of our national teams will be brought here for their camping, which will help a lot. The Cape Coast Stadium has a lot of facilities, and when they are brought here, they will get the needed training facilities. There is a pitch and other facilities such as accommodation and many others they can use when they camp here.

“The only problem here is a catering service, and we are working towards getting one for the site. Very soon you will be seeing the national teams camping here at Cape Coast”, he added.

On the other hand, the Sports Minister spoke about maintenance of the various sporting facilities in the country.

“Our tour is to also inspect the stadium, as well as make routine maintenance of the sporting facilities as one of our key priorities so we can keep the stadiums in shape than to leave them to rot.

“We are urging everybody to maintain all the facilities we have, and not wait until they are spoilt. Maintenance will keep the facilities in shape and ready for use always. The ministry is going to ensure routine maintenance is part of our curriculum”, he added.

Ghana will be hosting the 2017 WAFU Cup and next year’s Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, and these facilities have to be kept in shape prior to these tournaments.

According to reports, Central Regional Director, Abeiku Wilson of the National Sports Authority is pleading with the Sports Ministry to increase its staff. Currently, only 16 personnel are employed and working at the Cape Coast Stadium and the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium.
