Ghanaian boxing legend Professor Azumah Nelson has said the country is never short of world champions.

The Hall of Famer made this declaration on Morning Starr as the station celebrates the iconic figure on his 59th birthday, Wednesday July 19, 2017.
“We have a lot of champions in this country,” Nelson told the host Francis Abban, adding “but the problem is they need polished coaches and trainers and we need the boys to be humble.”

He acknowledged the efforts of the current crop of local boxing trainers and coaches, but also agreed to the fact that the new trends in the game demand people who can teach young boxers modern ways of doing things.

“When these two things are ensured…we can have more than 100 champions in this country in the next five years. The coaches are doing very well but they need to do better,” Azumah added.

Azumah was inducted in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004 and is now working to create the next generation of Ghanaian boxers.
