‘Joseph Agbeko is unprofessional’ - Katame

Joseph Joseph

President of the Kenyan Boxing Federation, Mr. John Katame, has described as ‘unprofessional,’ attempts by Joseph’ King Kong’ Abgeko to fight Nick Otieno without the consent of the their federation.

Agbeko was billed to fight Nick Otieno in a non-title bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra but the fight had to be called off due to his inability to receive authorisation from the Kenyan Boxing Federation.

Sharing his frustration at his home country in Kenya, Mr. Katame said he was baffled when he was notified that an agreement had been made by Nick Otieno to fight Joseph Agbeko in Accra.

He explained that his federation expected a written notification from Fresh King Kong Promotions and the Ghana Boxing Association (GBA) before they could sanction the fight.

“They acted unprofessionally and I must say we are very disappointed. We were never aware of this bout. Ghana boxing should have written a letter alerting us of the fight but no such thing was done I think it was so amateurish,” Mr. Katame said.

He added that he “expected them (GBA) to read the constitution governing boxing in Africa so that the right procedures will be followed but I am sure they ignored them. You cannot just come to the boxer and tell him you want to fight without prior notice to the federation.”

Meanwhile, President of the GBA has stated that such unprofessional acts will no more be countenanced and has warned all boxing promoters to undergo due diligence before arranging fights.
