Tennis academy to be established in Ghana

Accra, March 11, GNA - Walking International Tennis Academy (WITA), a Tennis company based in the United Kingdom is to establish a tennis academy in Ghana aimed at developing tennis at the grass roots level.

Mr Ekow Manly-Spain, Chief Executive of the Academy disclosed this at Press conference in Accra on Thursday.

He said as a step to unearth tennis talents, his establishment will organise clinics and seminars across the country to identify such budding talents who will be trained to become world class tennis players in the near future.

The Chief executive said most Ghanaian tennis players are unable to compete at the top class level because they did not receive enough training from the grassroots level.

Mr Manly-Spain said as a result, his establishment has designed a well-structured programme, which will develop players at the tender age by equipping them with basic tennis skills.

He said international coaches would be brought down to Ghana to take the players through such programmes whilst local coaches will also be trained by the foreign coaches to continue with the exercise.

The Chief Executive said the organisation hopes to change the face of tennis in Ghana, by taking it from the grassroots level hence their decision to establish the academy.

According to Mr Manly-Spain this is the only way the old trend of managing tennis in the country can be changed, adding that the nation has to move alongside modern trends of development in tennis.

Mr Manly-Spain said talented but under privileged children will be considered for scholarship to enable them develop their talent.

He expressed the hope that the programme will help lift the image of tennis in the country.
